The sharpened edge is only to assist the heated blade in separating the material while the heat does all cutting and sealing.

Excellent blade for cutting and sealing of stronger fabrics such as awnings, sails, ground cover, netting and webbing. HSGM Type F Heat Cutter Element - This heat element is mainly used to melt two pieces of rope on each side of the element, then slide the two sides of the rope off the element and push the two ends together causing them to seal together. Although it does seal the two ends together, there is no guarantee how strong it sealed. So it would have to be an application where strength was not a factor. The tip of the element is beveled if someone wanted to use it as a blade.
